History of the church

1788: A building was raised and framed. The building was taken over by Joel Marsh. It was acknowledged that the structure was too small to serve its purposes.

1791: Construction began on a larger church building at the current location.

1836: The church built in 1791 was destroyed by a fire.

By 1838, the current church was erected at the same site using some of the same foundation. At this point, the land was owned by Judge William Steele who, when the church was occupied, granted to the town the piece of ground currently known as the Town Green.

When the church was built, most of the population attended services.
The local church served as the community center.

Now, 138 years later, Sharon’s United Church of Christ congregation has dwindled in numbers, but not in spirit. While continuing to serve their congregation, the Church welcomes the opportunity to share the building to nurture the needs of the current and future community of Sharon.

In turn, the Sharon Community Trust will oversee needed improvements to the building and offer much needed secular community space in Sharon.

The Sharon Community Trust initiative provides a framework to transition to a shared space.
